now to add the oauth authentication element, based on understanding how the single-page application does it.

Once we have the webAPI/odata using an oauth endpoint provided by the very same app, we can have it consume one of microsoft’s “external providers” (google etc). Then we can substitute in our own, either AAD-based or ACS-based.
