we have to wonder. The only folks who DON’T know or believe that US policy on (broken) security policy and security assurances for consumer are: the American public. Exceptionalism means you have to believe that if only you try harder, you can regain that special status in which the rest of the 8 billion non-exceptionals will either be duped (that security products work) or else that, like Americans, they will suddenly see great social value in having stuff that doesn’t work – but which pretends to.

So long as it sells more stuff (by addressing fear) then good.. more mouths get fed, etc etc.

Its actually quite hard to argue against that, in the big picture of things.
